La identidad reflejada: traducciones inglés-español en el National Museum of Ireland

Abstract

El presente artículo pretende explorar cómo se expresa en inglés y traduce al español la identidad en textos del sitio web del National Museum of Ireland. Mediante la compilación de un corpus paralelo (inglés-español), se comprueba que el uso de adjetivos como marcadores de la actitud y el recurso a la voz pasiva influyen en cómo se expresa la identidad. En cuanto a las traducciones al español, no se detectan ni omisiones ni adiciones relevantes, y las traducciones se asemejan a los textos en inglés con respecto a la cantidad de información e implicaturas. Como consecuencia de esto, gran parte de los lectores hispanohablantes podrían no comprender todo el contenido de los textos, debido a que solo se explican parcialmente algunos hechos políticos e históricos.

This paper aims to explore how identity is both expressed and translated in texts from the National Museum of Ireland’s website. By compiling an aligned (English-Spanish) corpus, we noticed that the use of adjectives as attitude markers and of passive voice have an impact on the way identity is expressed. As for the translation into Spanish, no significant omissions or additions have been detected, and the translated output resembles the English texts in terms of amount of information and implicatures. As a consequence of this, most Spanishspeaking readers may not fully understand the information present, since some political and historical facts are only partially explained.
