Abstract
The chapter examines the narratives and aesthetics of contemporary music video through the works nominated for Video of the Year at the 2025 MTV VMAs. It assumes that this selection provides a representative snapshot of the current state of the format, shaped by digital consumption, industrial concentration and the growing convergence of cinema, television and online platforms. The study adopts a comparative analysis focused on two axes: narrativity and formal mise-en-scène. The findings reveal a clear expansion of the music video towards more elaborate narrative structures, exemplified by Ariana Grande’s Brighter Days Ahead, conceived as a science-fiction medium-length film. Alongside this model, weaker or hybrid narratives emerge in the videos of Billie Eilish, Kendrick Lamar and Sabrina Carpenter, which blend performance, visual collage and social commentary. At the same time, traditional performance-centred videos persist, such as those by Lady Gaga and Rosé with Bruno Mars, which update television-inspired codes and emphasise the artist’s central presence. Aesthetically, the study identifies a balance between established conventions —functional shot planning, compositional symmetry, coherent lighting— and devices that heighten visual dynamism, including choreographed tracking shots, handheld camera work and digital effects. Settings alternate between realistic locations and artificial environments that enhance narrative or performative intent. The chapter concludes that contemporary music video combines continuity with renewal: it retains its industrial and promotional dimension while adopting narrative and visual strategies that bring it closer to short-form cinema and strengthen its cultural significance within the digital media ecosystem.
