The Ethical Encounter as Translation of Otherness in Deborah Levy’s Hot Milk (2016)

Abstract

The theory of the ethical encounter with alterity that the philosopher Emmanuel Levinas developed since the sixties has been globally acclaimed and it continues to be discussed and studied in manifold areas of knowledge. As other critics such as Edith Wyschogrod (2002) or Scott Davidson (2012) have demonstrated, the notion of translation is central in Levinas’s work. In this paper, by relying on Zygmunt Bauman’s “cross-cultural translation” (1999), I contend that the ethical encounter with the other can be understood as an act of translation in itself, which at the same time is constantly translated into fiction through the publication of contemporary works that reflect on these moral issues. My aim is to show that the proliferation of fictional works that explore the ethical encounter with alterity contributes to society’s reflection on responsibility and care towards the other. In order to develop this point, I will explore Deborah Levy’s Hot Milk (2016) as an example of a contemporary text in which the ethical encounter with alterity can be portrayed as an act of translation that opens the door to the materialisation of ethical quests in contemporary societies.

La teoría del encuentro ético con la alteridad que el filósofo Emmanuel Levinas desarrolló desde los años sesenta ha sido mundialmente aclamada y continúa siendo discutida y estudiada en múltiples áreas de conocimiento. Como han demostrado otros críticos como Edith Wyschogrod (2002) o Scott Davidson (2012), la noción de traducción es central en la obra de Levinas. En este trabajo, apoyándome en la "traducción transcultural" de Zygmunt Bauman (1999), sostengo que el encuentro ético con la alteridad puede entenderse como un acto de traducción en sí mismo, que al mismo tiempo se traduce constantemente en la ficción a través de la publicación de obras contemporáneas que reflexionan sobre estas cuestiones morales. Mi objetivo es demostrar que la proliferación de obras de ficción que exploran el encuentro ético con la alteridad contribuye a la reflexión de la sociedad sobre la responsabilidad y el cuidado hacia el otro. Para desarrollar este punto, exploraré la novela Hot Milk (2016), de Deborah Levy, como ejemplo de texto contemporáneo en el que el encuentro ético con la alteridad puede retratarse como un acto de traducción que abre la puerta a la materialización de búsquedas éticas en las sociedades contemporáneas.
