Abstract

The research examines the news on climate change in different media, through the analysis of agenda setting and framing, in the context of a construction of media discourse. The role of the media has been relevant in the symbolic struggle of climate change images. The polarized public opinion on climate change in the USA, which has led the Trump government to withdraw from the Paris Agreement, as well as the revocation of environmental policies, is analyzed by the coverage that media with Republican and Democratic political tendencies gave to the climate crisis during the 12 days of the 2019 Climate Summit. The 189 news articles broadcast by Fox News, Breitbart, CNN, and the New York Times were identified, analyzed, and contrasted. The results reveal that media with a Republican political tendency were the only ones that broadcast denial news of climate change. Breitbart reported the largest number of news items throughout the sample, mostly denialists, at 71%, using tactics related to the spectacularization of the climate phenomenon, ad hominem attacks on ecologists and politicians, the connection between environmental initiatives and “eco-fascism” or the “radical left”, as well as use of the half-truth fallacy and questionable sources associated with the fossil fuel industry. Fox News practically did not address the issue during the summit. The Democratic political tendency media did not report any kind of denial news; their information and opinions communicated environmental initiatives and climate change consequences.
La investigación examina las noticias sobre el cambio climático en diferentes medios de comunicación, mediante el análisis del agenda setting y el framing, en el contexto de la construcción del discurso mediático. El papel de los medios ha sido relevante en la lucha simbólica por las imágenes del cambio climático. La opinión pública polarizada sobre este tema en Estados Unidos, que llevó al gobierno de Trump a retirarse del Acuerdo de París y a revocar políticas medioambientales, se analiza a partir de la cobertura que medios con tendencias políticas republicanas y demócratas ofrecieron sobre la crisis climática durante los 12 días de la Cumbre del Clima de 2019. Se identificaron, analizaron y compararon 189 noticias difundidas por Fox News, Breitbart, CNN y The New York Times. Los resultados revelan que los medios con tendencia política republicana fueron los únicos que difundieron noticias negacionistas del cambio climático. Breitbart fue el medio que más noticias publicó en toda la muestra y, en su mayoría, negacionistas (71%), utilizando tácticas relacionadas con la espectacularización del fenómeno climático, ataques ad hominem contra ecologistas y políticos, la asociación entre iniciativas ambientales y el “eco-fascismo” o la “izquierda radical”, así como el uso de falacias de medias verdades y fuentes cuestionables vinculadas a la industria de los combustibles fósiles. Fox News prácticamente no abordó el tema durante la cumbre. Por su parte, los medios de tendencia demócrata no difundieron ningún tipo de noticia negacionista; su información y opiniones comunicaron iniciativas ambientales y las consecuencias del cambio climático.
