El tema de la reproducción humana y todas aquellas cuestiones vinculadas a él, como la herencia, determinación del sexo, papel desarrollado por los progenitores o la naturaleza y procedencia del semen han formado parte del campo de estudio de los científicos griegos desde sus inicios, como se deja ver en la información que de estas primeras etapas de la ciencia jonia nos ha llegado.
