Abstract

Este capítulo analiza la construcción ética del ser en la novela Life After Life de Kate Atkinson, centrándose en cómo los encuentros con la alteridad, especialmente en contextos traumáticos como la guerra, configuran la identidad ética del personaje principal, Ursula Todd. A través de teorías de Lévinas, Bauman y otros pensadores, se examina cómo la empatía y la responsabilidad hacia los demás se convierten en pilares éticos del desarrollo del ser. La obra se propone como ejemplo de cómo la ficción histórica contemporánea puede invitar a la reflexión ética del lector sobre su propio comportamiento y decisiones.

This chapter explores the ethical construction of the self in Kate Atkinson’s Life After Life, focusing on how encounters with the Other—particularly under traumatic circumstances such as war—shape the protagonist Ursula Todd’s moral identity. Drawing on theories by Lévinas, Bauman, and others, the study emphasises the role of empathy and responsibility in ethical self-development.
