RT Journal Article T1 What music teacher will I be? A case study on the teaching philosophies of final-year pre-service Swedish music teachers. A1 Mateos-Moreno, Daniel K1 Investigación activa en educación K1 Música - Estudio y enseñanza - Suecia AB Written teaching philosophies are a common part ofapplications for music teaching positions and a pivotal exercisefor pre-service teacher development. However, their contents arenot often addressed in the music education research literature.Using a case study of last-year pre-service music teachers at aSwedish university, I explore these statements to uncover theirbeliefs about practicing the music teaching profession. The resultsrevealed four different areas of concern for the participants relatedto methodology, self, curriculum and students. Furthermore, the participants differ slightly from their counterparts in othersubjects by highlighting aspects such as professional developmentor the teacher-parents/guardians relationship. In addition, theyoften express their alignment with humanistic or constructivistpedagogical approaches while simultaneously intending to workwith extrinsic motivation. I argue the impossibility of classifyingtheir underlying music teaching philosophies within the traditionalones in the field as such proposed by Keith Swanwick, BennettReimer and Christopher Small. Finally, I discuss the limitations andthe implications of the results for the professional world.
