This article aims to identify and analyze theactions of a trainee teacher in orchestrating mathematical discussionsin an Exploratory Teaching environment.Materials/methods. This qualitative study of an interpretative natureand case study design focuses on analyzing the content of fourMultimodal Narratives.Results. The results show that the predominant actions focus onquestioning to foster understanding. In the sessions where thestudents experienced the most difficulties, it proved necessary tointerpret the interactions with the students and between thestudents by attributing meaning and sense to the differentinteractions. There was a need for the trainee teacher to understandthe students' strategies better and to reflect on the questioningstrategies. The characteristics of Exploratory Teaching facilitatedactions related to the systematization of learning. The phase ofsystematizing mathematical learning led the trainee teacher toactions related to systematizing learning. Finally, the absence of someactions reinforces the importance of reflection for professionaldevelopment.Conclusion. These results indicate that during the orchestration ofcollective discussions, the teacher's main actions center onquestioning and asking for clarification to interpret interactions withand between children. The study also shows that ExploratoryTeaching helps to systematize learning, such as revisiting andsummarizing the main topics of the discussion and recoveringstudents' prior knowledge.
