RT Journal Article T1 Unbiased Rounding for HUB Floating-point Addition A1 Villalba-Moreno, Julio A1 Hormigo-Aguilar, Javier A1 González-Navarro, Sonia K1 Arquitectura de ordenador AB Half-Unit-Biased (HUB) is an emerging formatbased on shifting the represented numbers by half Unit in theLast Place. This format simplifies two’s complement and roundto-nearest operations by preventing any carry propagation. Thissaves power consumption, time and area. Taking into accountthat the IEEE floating-point standard uses an unbiased roundingas the default mode, this feature is also desirable for HUBapproaches. In this paper, we study the unbiased rounding forHUB floating-point addition in both as standalone operation andwithin FMA. We show two different alternatives to eliminate thebias when rounding the sum results, either partially or totally. We also present an error analysis and the implementation resultsof the proposed architectures to help the designers to decide whattheir best option are.
