RT Conference Proceedings T1 A cane-based low cost sensor to implement attention mechanisms in telecare robots A1 Ballesteros-Gómez, Joaquín A1 Urdiales-García, Amalia Cristina A1 Caro-Romero, Juan A1 Tudela, Alberto K1 Robotica-Congresos AB Telepresence robots have been recently used forComprehensive Geriatric Assessment (CGA). Since the robotcan not track a person continuously, there are several strategiesto decide when to check them, from cyclic checks to simplerequests from users and/or caregivers. In order to adapt to theuser needs and condition, it is preferable to perform CGA assoon as regularities appear. However, this requires detectionof potential issues in users to offer immediate service. In thiswork we propose a new low cost force sensor system to detectuser’s condition and attract attention of CGA robots, so theycan perform a full examination on a need basis. The mainadvantages of this system are: i) it can be attached to anystandard commercial cane; ii) its power consumption is veryreduced; and iii) it provides continuous information as long asthe user walks. It has been tested with several elderly volunteersin care facilities. Results have proven that the sensor readingsare indeed correlated with the users’ condition.
