RT Journal Article T1 Revisiting the role of within-compound associations in cue-interaction phenomena. A1 Luque-Ruiz, David A1 Flores, Amanda A1 Vadillo, Miguel Ángel K1 Conducta - Modificación AB Although it is thought that within-compound associations are necessary for theoccurrence of both backward blocking and unovershadowing, it is not known whetherthis variable plays a similar role in mediating the two phenomena. Similarly, the roles ofwithin-compound associations in forward blocking and in reduced overshadowing havenot been tested independently. The present experiments evaluated how the strength ofwithin-compound associations affects backward blocking, unovershadowing, forwardblocking and reduced overshadowing. Using an allergy task, the strength of withincompoundassociations was varied by taking advantage of the participants’ priorknowledge of common and uncommon food pairings. Backward blocking andunovershadowing effects were only present when highly memorable compound cueswere used. Moreover, the magnitudes of both retrospective revaluation effects wereaffected by the strength of within-compound associations. Forward blocking andreduced overshadowing effects were independent of within-compound associations. These results have important theoretical implications for causal learning research.
