RT Journal Article T1 Wideband Ultrasonic Acoustic Underwater Channels: Measurements and Characterization. A1 López-Fernández, Jesús Manuel A1 Fernández-Plazaola, Unai A1 París-Ángel, José Francisco A1 Díez-del-Río, Luis A1 Martos-Naya, Eduardo K1 Acústica submarina K1 Sistemas de telecomunicaciones AB In this work we present the results of a measurementcampaign carried out in the Mediterranean sea aimed atcharacterizing the underwater acoustic channel in a wideband atultrasonic frequencies centered at 80 kHz with a width of 96 kHz,covering two octaves from 32 to 128 kHz. So far, these type ofwideband measurements are not found in the literature. Periodicorthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFMD) soundingsignals using Zadoff-Chu sequences have been specially designedfor this purpose. The collected data has been post-processed toestimate the time-variant impulse and frequency responses andrelevant parameters for system design like the time coherence, bandwidth coherence, delay spread and Doppler bandwidth. Thestatistical behavior of the channel gain random fluctuation hasalso been analyzed. This information has been extracted for boththe global channel and each path separately. The wide bandwidthof the measurements have allowed the characterization of thechannel in a scarcely explored ultrasonic band with an accuracythat is far beyond what is reported in previous works.
