The use of sub-wavelengthgratings (SWGs), i.e. structures that are small enough to suppress diffraction effects, enables local engineering of both refractiveindex and dispersion, thereby opening new possibilities for device design. Here we present some of the recent advances in refractiveindex and dispersion engineering using silicon SWGs, focussing on ultra-broadband and compact multimode interference couplersand directional couplers PB IEEE Photonics Society YR 2013 FD 2013 LK http://hdl.handle.net/10630/5491 UL http://hdl.handle.net/10630/5491 LA eng NO R.
