RT Conference Proceedings T1 Lone founders, types of private family firms and firm performance A1 Diéguez-Soto, Julio A1 López-Delgado, Pilar K1 Empresas familiares AB The purpose of this article is to provide an explanation forthe contradictory findings about the links between private familybusinesses (FBs) and organisational performance. The paper suggests thatlone founder firms determine the results by explaining the comparativeperformance of different private FBs and NFBs. In addition, we develop aparsimonious typology of private FBs that exploits the interactions ofthe components of family involvement to show that firms that achieve toavoid or minimize traditional agency conflicts tend to outperform thefirms that do not. It appears that the use of ownership dispersion as agovernance mechanism shepherds and monitors performance progress, and theconflict between large and minority shareholders seems to be more costlythan the conflict between owners and managers.
