The word “exvoto” is formed by the morphemes “ex” and “voto”, whose joint meaning is exhibition of a promise. Paintings of this nature are the result of the commission of a believer who has gone through trauma or illness and being free from the sorrow order a little painting to bear witness to the prodigiousness experienced by divine intercession, ceding the work as a present to the sacred image protagonist of the miracle. To materialise this offering, he turns to an artist without academist training, but whose line and represented shapes are understandable and to the taste of the general public. From this we intuit modest fees for the artist, but also his ability to earn the trust of the clientele and capture their most critical and personal stories. He thus becomes a mediator between the heavenly and the human misfortune producing one of the most obvious exponents of popular religiosity. In his paintings he captures individual, but also collective stories as the famous painting of the Plague of 1679 of Antequera, the largest votive offering of the entire Iberian Peninsula, which we will analyse carefully, by perfectly condensing the Baroque feeling in the face of catastrophe, so common in the XVII century. Precisely, this painting will be just with the other votive offerings dedicated to the Virgin of the Rosary of Antequera preserved in the Church of St. Dominic of this town the object of our analysis. Despite the limited instruction and the affordable cost of their works, these painters are original, as they narrate unique episodes, moving away from the mass production of other kinds of craftsmanship. In addition, they know how to write, because these compositions are not understood without the posters where the represented are narrated, giving absolutely prominence to the one who finances the painting and to the divine, not recording his name in any space of painting, or even in a hidden way. After that anonymity we can extract common denominators from votive offerings painters through the commissions and tastes of their clientele, who come to them for the effectiveness of their production and the ability to understand human suffering and the hope emanated from the religious and superstitious feeling so characteristic of the Baroque mentality.en_US
