Abstract
The chapter examines global graphic design trends in 2025 and proposes a dialectic between two dominant approaches: a functional paradigm focused on communicative clarity and technical efficiency, and an emotional paradigm centred on creating affective and memorable connections with audiences. These dynamics are situated within a context shaped by the rise of artificial intelligence, the visual saturation of digital environments and the growing relevance of social values in design, such as sustainability and cultural diversity. After reviewing the historical evolution of functional design and the emergence of emotional design in contemporary branding, the authors argue that current design operates through tensions between algorithmic precision and human subjectivity, between nostalgia and innovation, and between uniformity and expressive disruption. Drawing on a qualitative methodology based on trend reports and visual content analysis, the chapter identifies currents such as ugly minimalism, bold minimalism, abstract geometry, liquid gradients, glitch aesthetics, anti-design and the mobile-first approach. Each is interpreted as a response to digital homogenisation and as a strategy for strengthening memorability, differentiation and affective engagement. The chapter concludes that these trends reveal a hybrid scenario in which functionality and emotion coexist as complementary dimensions. The role of the designer is redefined as that of a cultural mediator who articulates both effective and expressive solutions within a fragmented and rapidly evolving visual ecosystem.
