Abstract
In recent years, a growing body of research has provided evidence of the impact of
pain-related cognitive/affective and behavioral responses on the development and
maintenance of chronic musculoskeletal pain (1,2,3). Catastrophizing, anxiety and painrelated fear have been identified as important mediators of pain and disability (4,5,6). The
fear-avoidance model (FAM) (7) is a relevant theoretical approach, which postulates a
pathway between these pain responses, physical disuse and chronic pain (8).
