Matricial norms in the light of source‑language materials, translated texts and indirect translations: a case‑study.

Abstract

ABSTRACT: The study of matricial norms (Toury 1995) has proved itself an illuminating descriptive tool for illustrating the complex relationships perceived among “originals”, translated texts, and other mediating versions. Thus, this paper explores the extent to which determining such norms may significantly contribute to uncovering the intricate links that underlie translational processes. To do so, this paper examines the description of these norms across the translations of 'Education: Intellectual, Moral and Physical' (1861) by Herbert Spencer, into Spanish and French in the last quarter of the 19th century.

RESUMEN: El estudio de las normas matriciales (Toury 1995) ha resultado ser una herramienta descriptiva muy reveladora para ilustrar las complejas relaciones que se advierten entre los «originales», los textos traducidos y otras versiones intermedias. Así, el presente trabajo estudia hasta qué punto la explicitación de tales normas puede contribuir, de manera excepcional, a la identificación de los complejos vínculos que subyacen a los procesos de traducción. A tal efecto, este trabajo describe estas normas en las diferentes traducciones al español y al francés de `Education: Intellectual, Moral and Physical' (1861) de Herbert Spencer, realizadas en el último cuarto del siglo XIX.
